The Active Pharma Ingredients are (API) are active chemicals used in the manufacturing of drugs. Another term for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient is Bulk Drug Substance, although API is more internationally recognized.
Any substance that is represented for use in a drug and that, when used in the manufacturing, processing, or packaging of a drug, becomes an active ingredient or a finished dosage form of the drug. Such substances are intended to furnish pharmacological activity or other direct effect in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, or to affect the structure and function of the body of humans or other animals. APIs include substances manufactured by processes such as (1) chemical synthesis; (2) fermentation; (3) recombinant DNA or other biotechnology methods; (4) isolation/recovery from natural sources; or (5) any combination of these processes.
In SLE, the Phytochemicals can be removed from the leaf, steam, bark, seed, root and from the entire plant. The extraction shall be achieved by using solvents and solvent systems. The solvents include water (aqueous extraction), methanol, ethanol, acetone, hexane, ethyl acetate, petroleum ether, di ethyl ether etc (Solvent extraction).
The process involves (both in SLE and LLE) extraction, concentration and drying.
The process involves reaction, separation (extraction, decanting, centrifugation, and filtration), crystallization, purification (recrystallization, centrifugation and filtration) and drying.
The extraction shall be Solid-Liquid extraction or Liquid-liquid extraction or combination of both methods in case of isolation from natural sources.
